Sophie Barnes Introduces The Summersbys:
When I started writing the first book in the Summersby series, I was certain of one thing – I wanted these books to be packed with
action, adventure and intrigue and immediately went to work on developing the characters. Alexandra came very easily, simply because I’d decided that I wanted a strong heroine who could match any man when it came to military endeavors. She is the youngest of the three Summersby siblings and while she is very stubborn, she’s also incredibly loyal – when it comes to protecting her family, there is no risk that isn’t worth taking. However, she’s also quite vulnerable underneath her tough exterior, and is terrified of losing her heart to any man because of the loss and heartache she’s seen her father go through when her mother passed away years earlier.
Alexandra’s brother Ryan, is nowhere near as rebellious as his sister – in fact, he prefers to stick to the rules of society, though he is rather proud of his sister’s achievements and does what he can to support her and keep her out of trouble. He’s not as skilled as her or his older brother William when it comes to swords or pistols. Instead, he’s much fonder of obtaining knowledge; he enjoys literature, philosophy and the arts – a trait which eventually leads him to abandon his work for the Foreign Office in favor of pursuing a career in medicine. Like his brother William, he hopes to marry a woman who stands out from the crowd, but being the conservative man that he is, he has a difficult time accepting precisely such a lady when she finally stumbles into his life.
William Summersby is his father’s heir, and as such, he has now decided that it is time to stop gallivanting about on secret missions. He’s a very level headed character, and while he does have a few moments of anger, he generally tries to analyze the situation from an objective point of view, making him calmer than most. It’s only when the lives of his nearest and dearest are threatened that he loses control and begins to see red. Primarily a military man like his father, William doesn’t share his brother’s love for the arts, but rather for weaponry and horses instead. He too is hoping to marry an exceptional woman, though he hadn’t quite planned on being unexpectedly trapped into marriage.
All three books are about relationships blossoming and growing in the midst of unusual and challenging circumstances – they are about overcoming fear in order to fight for a chance at true love and happiness. There are duels, carriage chases, murder, espionage and secret plots – all set against the glamour of the aristocratic, Regency world.

I really like the sound of this series. I especially like strong heroines; Alexandra seems just the type of heroine I prefer. Both Ryan & William too sound like great hero material. All different character types but none the less interesting for that. Rubbing hands in anticipation!

Definetely a new author to me, a series for my TBR list.Series sounds like it’ll be a good one. Will this series continue, where each book left off or are they each going to be able to stand alone by themselves? Hope you have a lot of success.

Thanks Cassandra! I do make a few references in books 2 & 3 to what took place in the previous books, but other than that, each book is able to stand alone =)

This book sounds really my cup of tea. I love a book that’s packed with action, mystery and intrigue. It definitely adds to the storyline. Actually, I did win this in e-book format, but I’ve never received it. Not to worry though, I would much prefer to have this in paperback. There’s nothing like the feel and smell of a book, and turning the pages one by one.

There are three books in this series, but I might add a few spinoffs later, based on some of the secondary characters. Books 2 & 3 will be out on November 13th & 20th. Setting is mostly Regency period England, though book one takes place primarily in France and parts of book 3 take place in Turkey

That description of Alexandra as being able to ‘match any man when it came to military endeavors. ‘ caught my eye. Several times in blogs authors or bloggers have asked what we readers looked for in a heroine – I’ve often said that I like them to have some unusual skill, so it looks like this is a story I’d enjoy. Do you have a military connection?
Sophie Barnes
June 25, 2012 at 7:32 AM (UTC -3) Link to this comment
Thanks Diane,
No, I don’t have a military connection, I just write what I would want to read myself, so I want it to be fast paced and fun, with characters that are either a bit out of the ordinary, or that will provide me with a challenge as I write =)

I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed reading How Miss Rutherford Got Her Groove Back and am thrilled that there are three books about The Summerby’s!
Thanks for letting us know about Alexandra and her brothers Ryan and William! I must admit that I’m thrilled that Alexandra’s book came out first but then I’m also the youngest of three children in my family and it does seem like being the youngest we always want to be “first” at some thing!
There is no doubt that I’ll be picking up ore than one copy of There Something About Lady Mary when it’s released including one for my daughter-in-law who married by younger son Ryon (okay so my Ryon is spelled with an O not an A but that’s how we spell it in my family and yes it is English). How could I resist getting it for her when my son Ryon when my son at first didn’t realize that she was the perfect woman for him when she stumbles into his life!
Finally comes William in An Act of Duty!. Hum, who does that remind me of? His father’s heir? A military man? Married to an exceptional woman? Does that remind anyone else of Prince William? Maybe, maybe not. I’ll just have to wait to see.
No matter, I can’t wait to read ALL the books you write!
Thanks for the chance to read a copy of Lady Alexandra’s Excellent Adventure!

:O I really love books, but I love them more when they’re part of a series!
Historical romance has become my favorite genre and one of my favorite things to read in books is one family is involve and what better than to read a book made for every one of the family member! I LOVE that, so i’m really looking forward to read this series. Thanks for the giveaway!

I am so glad I stopped by b/c I do enjoy historical romance novels and I now have more books to put on my TBR list! I am headed over to GR right now.
My Question to you would be :
What other series do you love or have inspired you?
Sophie Barnes
June 26, 2012 at 8:48 AM (UTC -3) Link to this comment
Thanks for your question, Amanda – the answer is easy =) I simply LOVE the Bridgertons, and as I’ve mentioned in previous posts, it was after reading ‘Romancing Mr Bridgerton’ that I decided to give writing a historical romance a shot. Good luck with the hop!

Random question: is it difficult to write believable sibling relationships? Cheers–
Sophie Barnes
June 26, 2012 at 8:52 AM (UTC -3) Link to this comment
Thanks for posting, Kelly =)
I didn’t find it too difficult to write about the sibling relationships as such…whether or not they’re believable will be for you to judge =) What was hard, was having decided on the character traits in book 1 and having to stick to those traits throughout books 2 and 3.
I hope this answers your question – have a great week!

What was the initial boost that helped you decide to publish your work for others?? I guess, what happened, the day that you finally said YES, I’ll do it??
Sophie Barnes
June 26, 2012 at 9:01 AM (UTC -3) Link to this comment
Hello Andalene!
When I began writing, it was always with the intention of trying to get it published – more as a personal goal than because I actually wanted others to read it. For me, writing is a fabulous experience where the characters invite me to participate in their adventures. Having my work published wasn’t something I really thought too much about until my first book How Miss Rutherford Got Her Groove Back actually went on sale – that’s when all the second guessing began, because at that point, there was no going back =)
Honestly, I couldn’t be happier with my choice, especially after receiving so much positive feedback from readers – it really makes the whole experience extra special and worth all of the hard work.
